Learn To Value Your Hidden Blessings


Most of the part of our lives, we think only about things we don’t have and envy those who are blessed with them. Scarcely anyone among us is happy with the glass that is half full, contrarily we lament that it is half empty. We are so sad for not having certain things that we completely forget to be grateful for so many things that we already have. This approach needs to be changed because having only a negative side of the picture in mind; we can never be satisfied and can never enjoy life. It is not very difficult, you just need to look at your life from a different perspective, focus on the half full instead of the half empty. Learn to value your hidden blessings and don’t take them for granted.

  1. Discover what you have

Needs and wants are totally different things. You might possess all the things you need but not even realize it because you are too busy running after the things you want. Running after the wants never end because we keep on wanting more and more. What you need to realize is that you are actually wealthy if you possess the basic necessities of life. If you have food to eat, clothes to wear and a place to live in, you are wealthier than so many people in the world. Just look at the lives of kids who die of hunger and the people who catch diseases because they are forced to drink contaminated water. Grab a glass of water, look at it, don’t you feel blessed? Clean drinking water is a blessing for millions in the world who are deprived of it.

See the pain of the families who just live under the sky; burning in the sun or catching a cold in rain. There is so much misery out there and you are sad just because you don’t have the latest iPhone, a new model car or a new luxurious house? Isn’t that unfair? Take a deep breath and thank God for so many things you have. Learn to value your hidden blessings and don’t ever take them for granted.

  1. Keep a gratitude log

We often forget what we have. Take time to think about the things in your life that you really love or enjoy. Like playing with grandpa or having dinner with family. There are countless blessings around you if you really think about it. It is helpful to write down the things that you feel happy about. This way you will not forget to value the blessings in your life. Don’t forget to write simple things like bathing with warm water in freezing cold. You can even write ‘brushing your hair’ in your gratitude log like what if you didn’t have hair? Having hair is a big blessing. Start writing as you start your day, when you get up you should be thankful for having a bed to sleep in and thankful for being able to sleep the entire night.

As you step on the floor, be thankful for having feet. As you step out of your room and see your family members, be thankful for having a family. This is going to be a never-ending list. So by no means, it is wrong to say you have countless blessings around you.

  1. Stop worrying about trivial things

We worry so much about the things that don’t even matter. Like having to wait in a queue at a supermarket, getting up late, missing a bus, failing a subject etc. We get so angry and disappointed if any of these things happen. Why? These things are so small that they don’t even have the power to mess with your emotions. What if you failed a subject? Stop worrying about it; you will clear it next semester. It is that simple. We need to realize the triviality of such things. This is important because if we keep on worrying about trivial things, we forget to value the hidden blessings and take them for granted.

  1. See the blessings in your problems

Problem is another word for bad, right? Having problems in life is bad but if you change your perspective, you can even see good in the bad. Your boss is forcing you to work on Sundays, now this is a problem. But you have this problem only because you have a job. What if you didn’t have a job? You are having this problem because you are lucky enough to work in an office.  With this perspective, you can welcome every problem with a big smile on your face.

  1. Imagine living without anything

You might be thinking that how can I be thankful for having trivial things of life; drinking water, regular breakfast, going to school, having a phone, having a family and so on. Now close your eyes and imagine that you don’t have any of the ‘regular’ things. Don’t you feel scared? Sleeping on the floor, not having anything to eat in the morning, not having a house to live in and not being able to afford education! That would be a miserable life. Isn’t it? The life you are living now with all the ‘regular’ things is a very happy life, loaded with blessings.

We are either worrying about the future or regretting the past or both. Living in the past or in the future doesn’t give us time to live in the present and see the beauty of it. If we learn to value the blessings in our lives and stop taking them for granted, only then we can let happiness enter our lives. It is doesn’t mean however that we should not wish or strive to get what we want. The best course is, in fact, to be thankful for what we are blessed with and make endeavor with all sincerity to materialize our dreams. Feeling disheartened over what we haven’t achieved yet and spoiled the peace of our lives is just insane and is the most negative approach.
